Its 6 Jan 3306 0:46:53 at Eol Flyou AA-A h64 a multi-black hole system. The main star is a black hole with a black hole binary and a black hole neutron binary. The black binary has an orbital period of 8 hours.
As I near Colonia (only 2,500 Lys away) I have been looking at the numbers.
Since leaving Deciat on Oct 29th (20,000 Lys away) I have travelled 49,000 Lys in around 60 hours of flight time in 760 jumps. My original plan was 160 jumps in about 3 hours!
I left Gandharvi on 29th November heading for Polo Harbour. After a brief stop on a low G world Froarsts JR-T d4-20 for water geysers surfing (current altitude record 1500m) I tried to set a new high-point above the galactic plane directly above Polo Harbour. After a few nervous jumps I found myself at Byao Ain AQ-Y d4. Only 2773 lys above the plane and I didnt need any jumponium but a record is a record.
Docked in Gandhavi early this morning. I left Gagarin Gate 2000 lys away 6 days ago. Ever the efficient explorer I made the trip in 76 jumps totalling 4400 lys!
It started sensibly enough. I made a sight-seeing stop at Gru Hypue AA-A g4 (Jo Ella's Flares) to marvel at the neutron star / black hole combo. I then continued my search for Arsenic. Still very sensible. I discovered a Sol like system complete with an ELW and orbiting moon which I sensibly scanned and mapped (Gru Hypue TF-F c11-0). Common sense then departed when I realised the moon was dotted with jagged peaks and soaring mountain ranges.
Other highlights included a rocky planet 8 ls from its start with an orbital period of 1.2 days. (Gru Hypue CH-B b1-0)
I did however discover (and almost fall into) a black hole.
Emboldened by my escape from the maze of death and bored of hunting for arsenic my thoughts turn to the kilometre high cliffs that were nearly my undoing. I fly around looking for the highest, steepest cliff. Setting down a few hundred yards from the edge I deploy the SRV and gun the throttle. The ground falls away. I pump the vertical thrusters and sail over into space. In the low gravity the anticipated plummet is a gentle glide to the canyon floor. Its over far too quickly. Bigger cliffs are needed.
A few kilometres later I find flat ground and summon my ship. On one side a Patagonian spire is silhouetted against the band of the milky way. On the other, the rings of a gas giant whose moon I am now on, rise above rolling hills. A fist like orange nebula behind the rings completes the view. I try to take pictures but none do it justice.
After a few abortive attempts to land on the spire I head back to orbit with 33% hull.. Later, I finally find 3 units of arsenic and examine the galactic map. It’s a dead end. I was close to neutron jumping straight down to a system I could never jump back from. I’m heading to Gagarin Gate for hull repairs. It's a well travelled route along the neutron highway 1500 lys below the galactic plane.
Discovering that the SRV has vertical thrust has been a mixed blessing. Launching into the air on low G worlds is fun. I no longer have to slalom between rocks, but there can be too much of a good thing.
All I need is some Arsenic to synthesize premimum FSD injections. I find a rocky body. I land. The geological sight appears to at the bottom of a deep depression. Naturally I launch off the rim at full speed boosting for all I'm worth. Landing in a heap having not touched the sides I realise there is nothing down here. I'll just go back. And then the problems begin.
I am stuck in a near vertically sided labyrinth an awfully long way from home. It's dark and, even for a rocky body, unendingly rocky. The further I spin up the sides the steeper it gets. I tumble back to the bottom. The hull creaks. I drive in circles. An hour later I hover over the self destruct button but I cant quite bring myself to do it. There must be a way out somewhere. I fiddle with the lights and find the full beam. Progress. I repair and refuel to stop the voice alerts. Progress is slow. I gain height and then lose it. I retrace my steps and try agin. A sister planet is silhouetted against the glowing band of the milky way. The sky is dotted with nebulae. Its a beautiful spot. I refocus. Another hour later I emerge kilometers away on flat ground.
Recalling my ship and returning to it takes another hour. 3 hours in i'm back aboard, chastened but wiser. I still have no Arsenic.
