Orion's Echo

this logbook is not in character

CMDR Idonis presented a question yesterday about how to find real stars in E:D. I have his permission to share this story. He has one of those certificates for his late father where they dedicate a star to you. The star is listed as 112421 Orion. I offered to help. It was based off the SAO catalog which uses B1950 Epoch. However the RA/dec on the cert were actually based on J2000 epoch. Luckily, I also found another study that gave the stars approximate distance by measuring its parallax. My first few attempts fell very flat.

I realized I had to find a way to align the spherical coordinate system astronomers use with E:D cartesian grid. My next few attempts also fell flat.

I went to bed and started again today. I used ChatGPT and had it write a different script to take data from known info on EDSM and calculate the offset angles.

I'm a novice to beginner programmer and this requires math I barely understand. Still, I was able to find the offset angles and write the converter. I tested it with known data on several stars.

I learned a lot, built something cool, and most importantly. I was able to help Idonis find his late father's star. ⭐ Closest actual star Synuefe BT-T b22-0 however he chose the nearest F5 star that matched the spectral designation on the certificate. Synuefe WQ-T d4-14

I'm happy to provide the python script to the community to see what they can do with it. EliteStarChaser on github
