Cmdr Hyford's Story, Part 2

Picking up where I left off the story of Cmdr Hyford and the Colonia Crash Site in the Col 69 Sector JI-I c10-4 system, it was 7 jumps to the Outotz NQ-C c26-6 system, and then another 4 jumps to the next destination system: Wregoe DK-R b4-1. There, close to the rings of a gas giant, I found the next beacon:

Beacon in Wregoe DK-R b4-1

That sent me to another beacon 6 jumps away in the Synuefe GB-O c9-8 system:

Beacon in Synuefe GB-O c9-8

That beacon the sent me 5 jumps and gave me the permit to the final system in the story: HIP 22460.

On jumping to the second-last system on this route, I was interdicted by Thargoids! I quickly hit boost, and was able to avoid the disabling energy field. I scanned the wake signal before continuing to my destination.

The first destination in that system is the megaship the "Overlook":

Overlook

The Overlook is in a bit of a bad way, but there are a couple of Ship Logs that can be read.

On the nearby moon, there are two Thargoid sites. The first was on the dark side, but emitted a glow of its own:

Thargoid site in darkness

The second site (near -51/-40) was on the light side:

About 144km to the south west of this site a 7km high mountain peak rose up out of the surrounding landscape:

This peak demanded I get into the SRV and drive to the top:

On top of the mountain

The final stop in this system was to visit Fort Asch:

Fort Asch

This brings Cmdr Hyford's story to a close, for now.

All the travelling has brought me just 7 jumps from my return destination: Ross 692.

Cmdr Hyford's Story, Part 1

The story of Cmdr Hyford and the Colonia Crash Site recently became a thing, so I thought I change from playing my alt account and switch back to my main account and follow it up.

I was already at Ross 692 where I keep my 'bubble jumper' Diamondback Explorer. This is a great little ship for getting around, especially exploration close to the bubble. By 'close' I mean anything less than 10,000Ly!

I never visited the original crash site in Colonia the few times I've been there. You don't need to have actually visited it to experience the story, so I set off from Ross 692:

Leaving Ross 692

It was about 30 jumps to get to the first point of interest in HIP 26176, travelling via Shenve to avoid permit-locked systems. The beacons is orbiting HIP 26176 A 5 j:

Beacon in HIP 26176

On nearby HIP 26176 A 5 i is the abandoned scientific station of Oaken Point, where the first set of voiced logs can be found:

Oaken Point

The message in the beacon locates the next point of interest to be in the Col 69 Sector JI-I c10-4 system, about 4 jumps away.

Beacon in Col 69 Sector JI-I c10-4

That message sends you to the Wregoe DK-R b4-1 system. Permit-locked systems prevent direct plotting of a route there, so I plotted via Outotz NQ-C c26-6.

That was where I left things for the evening.

Dash to KOI 413

While reading Reddit yesterday I noticed several posts about an upcoming planet 'collision' in the KOI 413 system.

I had heard of the 'Rhubarb and Custard' gas giants before, but never thought of going to visit them. The predicted collision was about 11pm my local time, which gave me a chance of Buckyballing there from the bubble.

Before I got home, I reviewed my ships, determining which would be the fastest for travelling. My DBX won by a whisker over my Anaconda and Asp Explorer.

I started my journey in Mildanji at 8:20pm, flying my Python the 5 jumps to Ross 692 where I had parked my DBX. I arrived at 8:30pm.

I transferred over then switched off the Guardian FSD booster before plotting the route to KOI 413. It is then turned back on without re-plotting the route. The reason for doing that is to reduce the fuel used for each jump. With the booster on, the trip was going to be 60 jumps, but with it off it became 68 jumps. Only 8 extra jumps, but the time saved scooping fuel would make up for that.

I left at 8:35pm and set out.

DBX

Almost exactly an hour later at 9:36pm I arrived.

Rhubarb and Custard

There were several fleet carriers in system. One, the "Opal of the Abyss", belonged to a Canonn group member and was in orbit around 'Custard'. I decided to land on it.

Opal of the Abyss

After several minutes the owner decided to move it to the other gas giant 'Rhubarb'. This was the first time I'd been on a carrier during a jump!

Rhubarb

That was great, but I decided to take off for a different view. By 10:35pm, the collision had begun.

Beginning the collision

Then for a closer look.

Closer collision

At the half-way point at about 11:20pm, the planet colours where half-and-half.

Half-and-half

Then over a minute or so, the colours flipped around.

Flipped colours

Soon the planets were well on their way to separating.

Separating

At 12:15am the collision was over, with a star peeking between the new gap.

Gap

As the gap widened, I tried to fly between them, but bumped into an exclusion zone.

Between the gas giants

It was well worth the effort to fly out. These collision happen once every 5 months or so. The other body collision I've been to has been removed from the game. This is well worth a visit while you can. The EDSM system page for KOI 413 lists the predicted future collisions.

Shore Stop

A recent mission was to restore power to Shore Stop. All was in darkness as I arrived, with Exioce 3 large on the horizon:

In darkness

The settlement is split into two with the power station at one end and the tourist habitation at the other, separated by landing pads. Once powered up, the site looks a lot more friendly.

Powered up

There were fires to be put out too.

Fires

And after looting the place, it was time to leave.

Mission complete

Sunrise Scavenging

Since Odyssey dropped, I've been getting a feel for how things work. Simple missions like fetching stuff or powering up sites.

Today I'd been restoring power to Gwon Botanical Estate a couple of times. It had started out in darkness, but I'd noticed it getting closer to the day/night terminator each time.

On the third visit the sky had a pre-dawn glow to it and by the time I'd re-powered the site and finished looting, the local star was just peeping over the horizon:

Gwon Botanical Estate

Odyssey is going to be good for screenshots!

Serene Harbour

I thought I'd go sightseeing the latest Galnet news - the prison breakout at Serene Harbour.

Serene Harbour

It's close to the bubble - just a few jumps even in my Python.

The missions logs are a bit dark. I initially only found three of the four - the fourth one seems to be on the very outer perimeter of the site and easy to miss.

I wonder where this story is going?

Admiral and King

I have just finished off my Empire rank and am now a 'King'! I'd finished my Federation rank a few weeks ago.

Doing station rescues is a really good way to earn rank, just make sure you do the 'Rep+++' missions. The others are largely a waste of time.

Rescuing the Witch Head Nebula

The Thargoids have attacked the Coalsack and Witch Head nebulas. I'm going there to rescue Empire peeps for the rank.

There is always time to appreciate the sights, though...

Crashed Anaconda

Around the time of the recent abandoned base discovery in the Coalsack Nebula, the wreck of an Anaconda was found in GCRV 65988. At the time I tried to find it, but was unable to locate it. After the recent trade CGs for making new capital ships I noticed I was close by and gave it another go.

This time I approached GCRV 65988 B 1 until I dropped out of orbital cruise and started gliding towards the surface. Only at that point did the location of the wreck appear in the Navigation panel. The wreck is located at -17.7930/149.3275.

Crashed Anaconda

There were three cargo racks that just produced some chunks of Antimony and Ruthenium. There was also an encrypted data core that was only worth about 180,000Cr.

Djabara and HIP 1742 Tip Offs

Both the Djabara tip off:

Djabara

and the HIP 1742 tip off:

HIP 1742

were very high security surface installations. The only way to scan these installations was to fly my Python right up to the data point and scan at close range. The message was the same in both cases:

Corporate Data Log: That's them - the Greenventure Group. I know they have a reputation for being environmentally friendly but they ain't. Three of the systems they terraformed last year had rare flora and fauna that they just wiped out to make way for colonisation. I have all the evidence I need. This is the big one - this is gonna make me rich...

Each scan was worth about 1.6MCr.
